WILLIAM WHITSETT AND MARY TOMPSON OF CLARK COUNTY, KENTUCKY
William Whitsett married Mary Thompson, the daughter of Lawrence Thompson and Sarah Finney. Sarah Thompson Whitsett, wife of John Whitsett, was also the daughter of Lawrence and Sarah Finney Thompson. This union suggests William was the brother of John Whitsett, Jr. of North Carolina and Sumner County, Tennessee. William and Mary were married in Orange County, NC on August 1, 1785. Azariah Thompson, brother of Mary was the bondsman. Although I have found no record showing John Whitsett, Sr. as William's father, based on the relationship between the Lawrence Thompson family and the John Whitsett family I believe it is likely. William and Mary, like John, Jr. and wife Sarah, purchased 640 acres in Sumner County in 1792. On October 10, 1789 William purchased 128 acres in Clark County, Kentucky. Beginning in 1808 William was involved in several court case arising out of promisary notes William co-signed with his son Joseph T(hompson?) Whitsett. Mrs. Jane Gray Buchannan, author of the Thompson family history, THOMAS THOMPSON AND ANN FINNEY OF COLONIAL PENNSYLVANIA AND NORTH CAROLINA (1987, Oak Ridge, TN) believed that William was a close relative of Samuel Whitsett of Montgomery, County, KY. based on deeds and law suits in the Clark County Circuit Court naming William and Patsey Whitsett and William and Polly Whitsett. My own research makes me believe that William and Patsey Whitsett, heirs of Samuel, were only distant cousins to William and Mary. A careful examination of these Clark Co. documents do not support the theory that the two William Whitsett's were one and the same. We know from estate documents that Samuel Whitsitt of Montgomery Co., KY had heirs living in Clark Co., at one time or another. The fate of William, Mary, their son Samuel and their five daughters is a mystery. I have been unable to identify this family in Kentucky or elsewhere after 1817 when they made deeds of gift of slaves to their five daughters. My guess is that they may have begun living with one of their children, thus disappearing from the record. Is seems likely that one or more of their children eventually went west to Missouri as did many members of Samuel Whitsett's family; however, I have found no record of them anywhere in Kentucky, Tennesse, or Missouri.

  4. 1792 Nov 29, Laurence Thompson of Madison Co., KY bond to John Whitsett of Sumner Co. [TN] district of Miro, "I promise to pay to John Whitsitt ... sum of eleven pounds ten shillings Virginia money for value received of him... Lander; this note is later - no date - assigned to Jonathan Bryan. This is confusing, but I interpret this as Laurence Thompson gives William 11 pounds etc. and William in turn assumes to debt to John Whitsett; William does the same to Jonathan Bryan who ends up owing J. Whitsitt the amount of the original note. This document links the Thompson family of Madison Co., KY with John Whitsitt of Sumner Co., TN. [16]
